Elvira Gómez was born on January 18, 1942 in Sincelejo, Colombia and raised in Cartagena, Colombia to the late Pedro Nel Gómez & Maria Clemencia Jiménez. She was the second of five siblings, (and was affectionately called Elvi by her family). Upon finishing high school Elvira began to work full time and supported her family; a role she gladly took on for many years afterwards. In 1970 she took a leap of faith, immigrated to New York City with a simple and large goal- to carve out a piece of the American dream. In 1972 she became a mother to a daughter, Julissa, and after losing her husband in 1974, she would courageously remain in the US to focus on raising her daughter in Washington Heights, NY. Over the years she worked full time, a union member on the assembly line of a printing and finishing factory to pay for tutors and private education of her daughter through elementary and high school. This investment would pay in dividends throughout her daughter’s life. Elvira retired fully vested in 2009. Known as a dedicated and loving mother, Elvira proved to be a hard worker, resilient and independent. For those who knew her, Elvira loved fashion, music, dancing, good food, Spanish programming (soaps and most recently, Exatlón, a sports and reality survival competition show), good company and the finer things in life. Elvira’s smile was radiant and contagious. Her personal love language was to give small but thoughtful gifts. All who knew her admired and loved her warmth, kindness, generosity and zest for life. She passed peacefully on June 18, 2022 in Cortland Manor, NY. She is survived by her daughter Julie Arce, son-in-law James Stone, sister Carmen Gómez & Hernando Gómez and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dear Elvira – we never met and yet I feel like I know you well.

There is no greater testament of a person and a mother, and who she is, then knowing who her children are.

I have known your daughter Julie for years through our work in the real estate industry and through charitable initiatives. When I met her I was instantly in admiration of so many amazing qualities beyond her talent and work ethic. Her generosity of spirit, her amazing good humor, her passion for helping others. She is an amazing and loyal friend. We shared common ground because we both grew up in Inwood…just blocks away from each other. I wish I knew her, and you, then! I know you are very proud of your daughter and you did an amazing job raising her. And this is a testament to you, Elvira.

Elvira, Julie talked about you all the time. Her love and dedication to you always shined through. The quality time you had together through a lifetime is more than anyone could ever hope for. You will be in her heart and the fiber of her soul forever.

    Rest easy.
