As my Bubby, it’s hard to say goodbye. But I know you and Mike get to say hello again, so that makes me happy.

Ms. Karig was my 12th grade English teacher at JFK HS. I have so many fond memories of her class-the books that we read and the discussions that followed. I also remember the times when we went to the 92nd Street Y and got to meet William Styron and Isabel Allende. Ms. Karig nurtured a love of reading and writing in myself as well as my classmates. In my bookshelf are 3 books that she along with Ms. Delfyett gave to me for English that year, one of which was “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison. I will never forget the many lessons she taught and her presence in my life I hold very dear to my heart. She was a wonderful teacher and I am thankful to have been a student in her class.

My sincerest condolences… I recently learned of Ms. Karig’s passing from one of my high school classmates. During Covid, our graduating class (Kennedy Institute of Science Society 1998) recently reconnected online, and in sharing our memories of high school, Ms. Karig was, for many of us, one of our favorite teachers. She challenged, and cared for, and pushed us as an excellent Bronx teacher would! Her literary trips intellectually and culturally opened us to new worlds both metaphorically and quite literally. She left an indelible mark on my education and I will always be thankful for what she taught me and I will remember her fondly. “There is no death… People die only when we forget them,’ my mother explained shortly before she left me. ‘If you can remember me, I will be with you always.” ― Isabel Allende, Eva Luna

Dear Stephen, I just learnt of your mums passing. My deepest sympathy, my prayers are with you and your family. Your mum is a beautiful soul; there are so many amazing things to describe your mum! I loved her humour on so many levels! It is an honour to have known such a great person, and I will truly miss her. Maria, and
